Hyperhidrosis
Operation Description
Concerning excessive sweating, the cause is often increased activity of sweat glands, medically termed hyperhidrosis. This condition can be genetic, physiological (related to pregnancy or physical activity), triggered by stress, or part of an underlying medical condition. While there are therapies and products designed for this condition, they may not always yield significant success. A more radical treatment is a surgical operation that removes sympathetic nerve fibers controlling sweating. However, botulinum toxin has emerged as a non-invasive treatment for hyperhidrosis, demonstrating significant success.
What is Botulinum toxin and How Does It Resolve Hyperhidrosis?
Botulinum toxin, is a purified neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The way Botulinum toxin functions for increased sweating is by blocking nerve signals that stimulate sweat gland activity. By reducing their activity, sweat production decreases, resolving this discomfort. The most common areas affected by sweating and where Botulinum toxin is injected—armpits, palms, and feet—are precisely the regions where this procedure has the best effect.

Candidates
- Individuals experiencing excessive sweating under the armpits, on the palms, or feet
- Individuals for whom excessive sweating poses a problem in daily functioning
- Individuals for whom other methods and treatments against sweating have not been effective
Preparation
Hyperhidrosis treatment does not require any specific preparation. The doctor will decide the amount of botulinum toxin needed for the treatment before starting.
Operation time
The treatment begins with cleaning and disinfecting the treated area, whether it's the armpits, palms, or feet. Then, Botox toxin is injected using micro-needles at multiple points in the treated area, injecting a small amount of Botox approximately every 1.5 to 2 cm. The duration of the treatment is about 30-45 minutes.
Botox for sweating is a very efficient method, and one treatment is enough to achieve significant improvement. The effects of Botox, reducing sweating, become noticeable after 3-4 days. The results of the treatment can last from 4 to 6 months, and after that period, it is advisable to repeat the treatment. As with other procedures using botulinum toxin, it is expected that the more times the procedure is repeated, the longer the results will last.
Recovery
As soon as you finish the Botox treatment for sweating, you can return to your daily activities. It is advisable to rest as much as possible on that day and avoid excessive physical activity that can induce sweating. If the treatment was performed on the palms, it is recommended to avoid washing hands frequently with warm water and excessive use of the hands. For Botox on the feet, it is advisable to avoid wearing shoes for too long on the first day, as well as excessive walking or running.
Safety precautions
Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis is very safe. If performed by qualified doctors, as is the case at Colić Hospital, complications are very rare. Mild redness, swelling, and discomfort in the treated area, and possibly small bruises, may occur after the procedure, but these typically diminish almost entirely the next day.
