Trigger finger
Operation Description
Trigger finger occurs due to thickening of the tendon and its sheath where it passes beneath the pulley ligament. Because of this thickening, it becomes difficult for the tendon to pass normally, resulting in difficulty moving or stiffness in the finger. The cause of trigger finger is often attributed to an injury to the finger tendon and its sheath, leading to inflammation. It is more common in women, and the fingers most frequently affected are the thumb, middle, and ring fingers.
For trigger finger, treatment can be implemented through several methods, but surgical intervention is often the most successful. Other methods, such as physical therapy, wearing a splint, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications, may help if the finger clicks but is not stiff.

Candidates
- Individuals for whom other treatment methods have not been effective.
- Individuals experiencing pain and restricted finger mobility.
- Individuals with finger stiffness.
Preparation
Before the surgical procedure, the doctor will assess the function and mobility of the trigger finger and palpate its tendons and channels. Afterward, the surgical intervention is scheduled, usually performed under local anesthesia.
It is advisable to quit smoking one month before the operation and stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements two weeks before to avoid complications during and after surgery.
Operation time
Local anesthesia is administered in the palm region, and the intervention begins. A small incision, approximately 15mm in length, is made on the side of the palm where the affected finger is. This allows access to the channel through which the tendons pass. The channel is then cut, enabling the tendons to slide and function normally, allowing the finger to bend and straighten properly. The procedure takes between 10 to 20 minutes.
Recovery
The patient can go home after the intervention. It is recommended to rest for the first few days after the procedure, avoiding intense physical activity and putting excessive pressure on the hand, although the hand can be used. Once the stitches are removed, the patient can return to normal activities.
Safety precautions
In the initial days of recovery, swelling and bruising of the operated hand may occur but quickly subside. Additionally, complications related to trigger finger surgery, such as transient finger numbness and pain during movements, may occur.
Following preoperative and postoperative advice from the doctor can help prevent any complications and ensure proper recovery of the operated hand.
