Implant Removal
Operation Description
Patients opt for breast implant removal for various reasons, including both aesthetic and medical concerns that jeopardize the patient's health. Here, we will outline the most common reasons.
Silicone Rupture in the Breasts
Implant rupture is initially noticed by a sudden and rapid decrease in implant size, confirmed exclusively through breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). When an implant ruptures, symptoms that may indicate a problem include local pain, sensations of numbness and tingling, deformation of breast shape, and nodules in the breast.
Capsular Contracture
Another possible complication is capsular contracture, where a capsule forms around the implant, requiring the surgeon to remove it.
Rippling
Yet another possible reason is rippling, the displacement of implants leading to their visibility on the skin.
For each of these complications, implant removal may be necessary, and the patient can choose either to replace them with new implants or return to a natural breast appearance without implants.
At Colić Hospital, you can schedule consultations with our expert plastic surgeons, who will thoroughly discuss and listen to your reasons for wanting to remove the implants. They will inform you about all the details of the procedure and address any questions you may have about the surgery. In addition to implant removal, you can also consider breast lift and tightening to prevent the breasts from losing shape or sagging, which will also be discussed during consultations. Candidates
Ideal candidates for breast implant removal may include:
- Patients who no longer wish to have implants
- Patients dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts
- Patients who, for medical reasons, need to remove implants
Preparation
Before the implant removal surgery, specific preparatory steps are taken. Since the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, laboratory tests and an internist examination with an ECG are required. It is advisable to quit smoking a month before the surgery and stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood coagulation and complicate the operative and postoperative course two weeks before.
Operation time
The implant removal surgery begins with anesthesia administration. Afterward, an incision is made at the location determined and agreed upon by the surgeon and the patient as the best, and the implants are removed.
Since scar tissue or a capsule normally forms around the implant, it is also removed during this procedure. Once all structures are removed, the incisions are stitched, and the intervention is completed. The duration of the surgery depends on its complexity.
Recovery
After the intervention, the patient stays overnight at our hospital. We strive to provide exceptional service and make the patient's stay as comfortable as possible.
Pain, bruising, and swelling may occur after surgery but quickly subside. If necessary, they will be regulated with medication. Two weeks after the surgery, the patient returns for suture removal.
Patients usually can return to daily activities and work after 7 to 10 days, and the overall recovery may take 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, it is necessary to avoid intense physical activity and lifting heavy objects.
Safety precautions
Complications rarely occur after implant removal surgery. Increased bleeding, swelling, and unwanted reactions to anesthesia are possible. With Colić Hospital's excellent team, these complications are rare, and by proper preparation and following our advices, including preoperative and postoperative preparations, it is possible to completely avoid these risks.
Most patients are concerned about whether their breasts will look completely different from how they were before the breast augmentation. After the procedure, the breasts may appear somewhat relaxed and hanging for a while. However, as time passes and scars heal, the breasts will become firmer, gradually returning to their original shape. The extent to which the breasts will return to their previous state also depends on the patient's age, overall health, and skin condition. If the patient is not satisfied with the appearance of the breasts after implant removal, a breast lift operation can be performed to achieve a satisfactory look.
