Facelifting
Operation Description
As time passes, the skin loses its elasticity, resulting in sagging skin, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. This natural process commonly occurs in both women and men. Besides aging, reduced collagen and elastin production, hormonal changes during menopause, and exposure to harmful factors such as sunlight, tobacco smoke, inadequate nutrition, and stress further contribute to the loss of skin tone and firmness.
The regular skin care, a healthy lifestyle, and cosmetic treatments offer only a partial answer to the question of how to look younger. For visible results, a visit to a cosmetic surgeon is sometimes inevitable.
A facelift is an aesthetic surgery that involves combining various techniques and is one of the main anti-aging procedures. The goal of this procedure is to tighten and lift the sagging tissues of the face and neck, achieving a younger and fresher appearance.
Facelift treatments are often combined with other procedures such as eyelid correction, facial liposculpture, or superficial peeling. By combining different procedures, maximum lifting results are achieved.
Before deciding on a facelift, one of the specialized doctors in aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery at Colić Hospital will conduct consultations with you. Based on your preferences and their assessment, our doctors will propose the best solution and help you decide on the surgery.
Candidates
Ideal candidates for a facelift are:
- Individuals dissatisfied with the appearance of their face
- Individuals bothered by sagging skin and other signs of aging
- Individuals experiencing skin sagging on the face and neck due to weight loss
Preparation
Before the intervention, the patient undergoes certain preparatory steps, including an internist examination, an examination by an anesthesiologist, and necessary laboratory analyses.
It is advisable to quit smoking one month before the surgery and stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood clotting two weeks before the operative and postoperative procedures.
Operation time
A facelift is performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. An incision is made at discreet locations along the hairline, extending immediately in front of the ear, below the earlobe, and finishing behind the ear.
Once the facial and neck skin is freed in this way, the surgeon begins carefully removing excess skin. Sometimes, if needed, liposuction is used to remove fatty deposits under the jaw and on the neck. This enhances facial and neck contours, providing an even better-tightening effect.
When the surgeon removes all excess skin, the incisions are stitched up, and the intervention is completed.
The operation lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the type of procedure, the extent of the necessary lift, and the potential tightening of additional regions such as the neck, temples, etc.
Recovery
After the intervention, the patient stays overnight in our hospital. The bandage applied to the face and neck after the procedure is removed after a maximum of 2 days. Recovery is usually accompanied by swelling and bruising, but these symptoms gradually decrease, and almost disappear within a week. In the first few days, mild numbness of the skin may occur due to the tightening effect, but it also quickly subsides.
It is recommended that the patient sleeps with an elevated headrest during the first two weeks as part of the recovery. To ensure the best recovery, the patient needs to rest during the first week to 10 days, after which stitches will be removed. After stitch removal, the patient can return to work and daily activities.
Safety precautions
Like any surgical procedure, there is a minimal risk of complications such as bleeding and infections. With our team, these complications are extremely rare, but it is crucial for patients to strictly adhere to preoperative and postoperative advice from doctors to avoid any risks completely.
