Rhinoplasty
Operation Description
Nose correction is an aesthetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the nose and making it more harmonious. This procedure corrects nasal asymmetry, reduces or increases nose size, changes the shape of the nasal tip or cartilage, and corrects deviations of the nasal bone. Nose correction is also performed to enhance nasal functionality, such as improving breathing.
The upper part of the nose is composed of bone, and the lower part is made of cartilage. Nose correction involves altering the shape, size, and proportions of both the upper and lower parts of the nose. Through surgery, it is possible to reduce or increase the size of the nose, correct asymmetries, reduce or straighten curvatures, and change the shape of the nasal tip or nostrils.

Preparation
Before scheduling nose surgery, the patient will undergo a detailed examination and consultations with our surgeon. The doctor will inquire about the motives for nose surgery, expectations from the surgery, the patient's medical history, existing nose problems, and whether the patient is on any regular medication. After the discussion and examination by the surgeon, the patient undergoes preoperative preparation, including an examination by a cardiologist, and anesthesiologist, and necessary laboratory analyses.
To prevent the possibility of increased bleeding, it is recommended to stop taking medications and supplements that affect blood clotting, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other herbal mixtures, 10 days before the surgery. Additionally, smokers should quit smoking at least one month before the intervention to ensure operative and postoperative success.
Operation time
Nose correction is performed under general anesthesia. The surgery can be done in two ways, through two different approaches to nasal structures.
The first approach is open, where a thin incision is made between the nostrils, minimally visible and eventually disappearing after the wound heals. The second approach is closed, where the incision is made inside the nostrils and is not visible externally. Regardless of the approach, it is recommended to address all nasal structures during one surgery. Each subsequent correction would be significantly more complex and demanding.
After the intervention, a compressive mask is placed on the nose. In some situations, tampons are placed inside the nostrils, and the surgeon will inform you if this step is needed.
Surgery lasts from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Recovery
After nose correction, patients stay overnight in our hospital to monitor the first and most crucial postoperative period. Mild swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes may occur during recovery but gradually subside over a few weeks. Patients are typically prescribed pain relievers for any discomfort. Following the advice and instructions of our professional staff, patients can return to their daily activities after two weeks.
One week after the surgery, stitches are removed, as well as the compressive mask and tampons, if used. During the first 2 weeks after the surgery, patients are advised to rest and breathe through their mouths, and during lying down and sleeping, it is recommended to use elevated pillows to keep the head always raised. Patients can expect swelling and bruising under the eyes during the first weeks of recovery. These gradually fade and completely disappear within 2 to 3 weeks.
In the early stages of recovery, patients should avoid intensive physical activities, blowing the nose, and applying pressure to the nose in any way to prevent swelling and bleeding. Four months after the surgery, wearing glasses is not advisable, and avoiding contact sports and sports involving a ball that could injure the nose is recommended.
Safety precautions
Rhinoplasty is a complex operation that comes with certain complications that are not common but may occur. These include bleeding, infections, adverse reactions to anesthesia, permanent numbness in and around the nose, pain, scarring, and difficulty breathing.
With the top-notch team at Colić Hospital, these complications are rare, but it is of utmost importance that patients strictly adhere to our advice to completely avoid these risks. It is crucial to emphasize that nose correction for aesthetic reasons is recommended after the age of 18, as before that, the nose is not considered fully developed.
