Upper eyelid lift
Operation Description
Drooping eyelids create vision problems, narrowing the field of vision, making the eyelids heavy, and giving the eyes a tired look. In addition to sagging skin, some individuals are prone to the accumulation of fat in the eyelid area, causing the eyes to appear puffy and droopy. Only blepharoplasty – surgical lift of the upper eyelids, can regulate the sagging of the upper eyelids.
Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic procedure that addresses both aesthetic and functional issues of drooping eyelids. This procedure can significantly refresh the facial appearance, making the eyes look more open and rejuvenated, while also improving vision.
The surgery involves removing excess skin from the upper eyelids, removing fat pads if present, and, if necessary, removing orbital muscles. The upper blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids alone or both upper and lower eyelids together. For a maximum effect of tightened skin, it can be combined with a facelift.
Before deciding on an upper eyelid lift, schedule a consultation at our hospital, where one of our expert specialists in aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery will talk to you and, based on your expectations and their assessment, propose the best solution. Candidates
Ideal candidates for upper blepharoplasty are:
- Individuals whose eyelids have started to droop due to aging
- Individuals with accumulated fat in the eyelid area
- Individuals with genetically conditioned drooping eyelids
- Individuals whose drooping eyelids create aesthetic issues
- Individuals whose drooping eyelids cause vision problems (narrowing of the visual field)
Preparation
If only the upper eyelid correction is performed, upper blepharoplasty at Colić Hospital is done under local anesthesia. In cases where both upper and lower blepharoplasty are combined, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. As part of the preparation for surgery, it is recommended to stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that can affect blood clotting two weeks prior to the procedure, as they can complicate the operative and postoperative course.
Operation time
The correction of the upper eyelids is performed under local anesthesia. An incision is made on the upper eyelid, within the natural crease of the skin, where excess skin, fatty tissue, and if necessary, a portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle are removed. After that, the incision is sutured and the procedure is completed. The incision is placed in a way that makes it minimally visible, and as the scar heals, it becomes hidden within the natural crease of the eyelid, making it practically unnoticeable. The duration of the surgery is approximately 30 minutes.
Recovery
After the blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids, the patient usually returns home on the same day. Recovery from this procedure is relatively fast. Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising may occur during the first few days after the procedure, but they can be reduced by applying cold compresses and prescribed medications to alleviate swelling and discomfort. In individuals with generally sensitive eyes, increased tearing of the eyes may occur.
Stitches are removed one week after the intervention, and then the patient can return to daily activities. The final result of the procedure becomes visible after a few weeks, once the swelling subsides.
Safety precautions
Complications after upper eyelid lift are very rare. If they occur, they most commonly involve transient swelling with bruising, infections, eversion of the lower eyelid, inability to fully close the eyelid, or visible scars. These complications can be prevented by following preoperative and postoperative advice from the doctor.
