Operation Description

Xanthelasma are small, pigmented nodules on the skin, most commonly appearing at the corners of the upper or lower eyelids. These nodules have a yellowish color; sometimes they are flat and level with the eyelid skin, while other times they are raised. They occur due to the accumulation of fatty deposits beneath the skin surface and can be caused by elevated blood cholesterol levels or genetic predisposition. Removal of xanthelasma is performed by laser, radiofrequency, or surgical methods.

If you have xanthelasma that you wish to remove, schedule a consultation at Special Hospital Colić at +38169 3699801. A member of our team of specialists in aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery will explain all the details of the procedure and answer your questions.

Candidates

All individuals with xanthelasma at the corners of the upper and lower eyelids who find them bothersome are candidates for removal.

Preparation

Removal of xanthelasma is considered a minor procedure, but since their appearance can be associated with elevated cholesterol, it is recommended to perform biochemical blood tests before the intervention. If elevated lipids are found, additional therapy to regulate them may be necessary.

It is recommended to stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that affect blood coagulation before the procedure, as they can complicate surgery and recovery.

Operation time

When removal is done by radiofrequency, a topical anesthetic cream is used. The radiofrequency method works by melting the xanthelasma on the eyelids until they completely disappear. After removal, a crust will form that falls off within 7 to 10 days, leaving no scars. This method is quick and usually requires only one treatment for smaller xanthelasma.

When removed surgically, the operation is performed under local anesthesia. Small incisions are made at the sites of the xanthelasma, where all fatty tissue and affected skin are removed. After removal, the incisions are sutured. The procedure lasts about 30 minutes.

Recovery

Whether using radiofrequency or surgical method, patients go home immediately after the procedure. Removal of xanthelasma does not require special recovery, so you can return to daily activities right after. It is advised to avoid intense physical activity, excessive sun exposure, swimming pools, and saunas shortly after the procedure, especially if surgery was performed. Sutures are removed 7 days after surgical removal.

Safety precautions

After radiofrequency removal, small wounds form where the crusts develop and fall off within 7 to 10 days. Slightly visible scars may remain but will fade over time. Surgical removal may cause mild swelling and small bruises that resolve after a few days. Serious complications are very rare and can be avoided by following preoperative and postoperative medical advice.
