Tenosynovitis
Operation Description
Tenosinovitis, known as De Quervain's syndrome can be treated surgically for a permanent resolution of discomfort. Symptoms of tenosynovitis include pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, difficulty moving the thumb and wrist, and stiffness when moving the thumb.
To diagnose tenosynovitis, the surgeon will conduct a hand examination, typically using the Finkelstein test. For this test, the thumb is bent across the palm, and then the rest of the fingers are bent over the thumb. After that, the wrist is tilted towards the small finger, and if these two exercises cause discomfort in the thumb area, De Quervain's tenosynovitis is diagnosed.

Candidates
- Individuals diagnosed with De Quervain's syndrome
- Individuals with constant pain in the thumb and wrist
- Individuals with difficulties using the thumb of the hand
- Individuals for whom other methods to manage this syndrome have not been helpful
Preparation
Before the surgical procedure, patients will undergo a thorough examination and diagnostic tests to precisely determine the presence of De Quervain's syndrome. After positive tests, surgical intervention is arranged, usually performed under local anesthesia. It is advisable to quit smoking one month before the surgery, and two weeks before, stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood coagulation and complicate the operative and postoperative course.
Operation time
After administering local anesthesia, an incision is made on the skin in the area of the wrist joint and the final part of the forearm. This reveals the narrow tendon sheath and its roof are cut to allow tendons to slide normally and the thumb to move normally. The incision is stitched, and the intervention is completed. The duration of the operation is between 20 and 30 minutes.
Recovery
The patient goes home after the surgery. It is recommended to use the thumb and wrist of the operated hand as little as possible. The stitches are removed 14 days after the operation, and physical therapy is included in the recovery process if the symptoms of this syndrome have been present for a longer time.
Safety precautions
Complications after this operation are very rare. In the first days of recovery, there may be pain, swelling, and bruising, but these quickly subside. Moving the thumb at the beginning of recovery may cause pain. Following preoperative and postoperative advice from doctors can help prevent any complications.
