Eyebrow, Beard, and Mustache Transplantation
Operation Description
Eyebrow, beard, and mustache transplantation involve the transfer of hair follicles from donor regions with sufficient hair to areas experiencing hair loss or thinning. Similar to hair transplantation, the donor region is typically the occipital part of the head, where hair is denser and thicker. If the patient lacks a sufficient amount of hair in that area, follicles can be extracted from other parts of the body, such as the arms, legs, chest, or back.
FUE Transplantation Method
The method used for transplantation at Colić Hospital is FUE (follicular unit extraction). It involves the extraction of individual hair follicles and their transplantation. Notably, with the FUE method, the entire follicular unit (transplant, graft) is transplanted, containing usually 1 to 4 hairs along with blood vessels, glands, muscles, and protective fatty tissue. This ensures that the transplanted follicles are supplied with circulation and tissues necessary for their functionality and development, promoting the growth of new hair.
If you are interested in eyebrow, beard, or mustache hair transplantation and want to address hair deficiency in these regions, schedule a consultation at Colić Hospital at +38169 3699801. One of our expert doctors, specialists in aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery, will discuss the procedure details with you and assess whether you are a suitable candidate.
Candidates
Candidates for eyebrow, beard, and mustache hair transplantation include individuals with noticeable thinning or loss of hair in these regions, where thinning has persisted for some time, and other methods have proven ineffective. Ideal candidates may be:
- Individuals experiencing thinning or hair loss from the beard, mustache, or eyebrows due to stress or other traumas.
- Those whose hair in these areas has thinned or fallen out due to certain health conditions or the use of specific medications.
- Individuals with a sufficient amount of hair in donor regions for transplantation.
Preparation
Before eyebrow, beard, or mustache transplantation, it is advisable to take a break from intense physical activity for 7 to 10 days. Additionally, it is recommended to stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood coagulation two weeks before surgery to facilitate the faster healing of small wounds occurring after transplantation.
During consultations, the doctor will assess whether there is a sufficient amount of healthy follicles in the donor region and determine where the hair will be transplanted. The doctor will also discuss with you the distribution of transplanted follicles and the final appearance of the treated region.
Operation time
On the day of transplantation, if treating mustaches or beards, the hair in that area needs to be trimmed to a length of 1 to 2 mm. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia administered along the entire donor region to minimize any discomfort. Using a special micro-needle, hair follicles are separated from the donor region without damage or scarring. As each follicle is extracted, it is placed in a special solution to keep it functional until the transplantation. The duration of this part of the procedure depends on the amount of hair to be transplanted but usually lasts 1 to 2 hours.
Once all follicles are extracted, transplantation to the desired region begins. This part also involves local anesthesia, and the first step is creating incisions. The doctor precisely determines the depth of the incision for each follicle, the angle at which they are placed, and the arrangement to achieve natural results, ensuring that each hair grows properly and in proportionate lengths. When this part is completed, follicular units are transplanted into the incisions. This part of the transplantation takes about 30 minutes, again depending on the amount of hair being transplanted.
Recovery
After the transplantation, the treated region is covered with antibiotic ointment, and gauze is applied to the donor region. The patient goes home, and the next day, they return for dressing removal. The next check-up is after 7 days, with the last one after 14 days. Intense physical activity and excessive exposure to sunlight are not recommended for the next 10 to 14 days.
Whether beard, eyebrow, or mustache hair transplantation has been performed, none of these areas should be treated with aggressive cosmetics after the procedure but only with the products provided by us and as advised.
After some time following transplantation, the transplanted hair will fall out. This is an expected part of the process and should not cause concern. Once these hairs fall out, it takes a period of 3 to 6 months for new hairs to start growing. Around 9 months after transplantation, hair in the region of the mustache, beard, or eyebrows will significantly and visibly grow.
Safety precautions
Common side effects that may occur after eyebrow, beard, or mustache transplantation include sensitivity in the treated area, slight redness, tightening, or tingling. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. Regarding more serious complications, they are extremely rare because this procedure is quite safe when performed by experienced doctors. A more severe complication could be an infection in the treated area, which occurs only if the patient does not follow the doctor's preoperative and postoperative instructions.
