Operation Description

Implant replacement is a surgical procedure in which existing breast implants are removed, and new ones are inserted. The reasons for this surgery can be aesthetic, when the patient no longer likes the appearance of the existing implants, or due to complications that can arise from breast implants.

Complications of breast implant surgery

Possible complications include:

  • Implant rupture, initially noticed by a sudden and rapid decrease in breast size, confirmed exclusively by breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Capsule contracture, forming around the implant, requiring the surgeon to remove the capsule.
  • Rippling, the movement of implants leading to their visible contours on the skin.

At Colić Hospital, you can schedule consultations with our expert plastic surgeons, who will listen to you and thoroughly inquire about everything relevant to this procedure. They will provide detailed information about the implant replacement surgery. Our surgeons will suggest the best solution and assist you in making a decision about the surgery. As the procedure is similar to breast augmentation surgery, a decision on the incision for implant removal and replacement must be made. This incision does not necessarily have to be the same as the incision made during the initial breast lift surgery. Depending on the reasons for implant replacement and the position, shape, and size of the existing implants, these factors will also be discussed and agreed upon during consultations at Colić Hospital.

Candidates

There are several reasons why patients seek implant replacement, both aesthetic and health-related:

  • Patients who want larger or smaller implants than their existing ones.
  • Patients with breast sagging caused by changes in body weight.
  • Patients with implant rupture.
  • Patients with capsule contracture.
  • Patients whose implants have changed position, causing rippling.

Preparation

Before breast augmentation surgery, certain preparatory steps are taken. Since the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, laboratory analyses and an internist examination with an ECG are required.

It is advisable to stop smoking one month before the operation and cease taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood clotting two weeks before the surgery, assuring good operative and postoperative course.

Operation time

Breast surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure begins after administering anesthesia.

An incision is made using the previously agreed-upon technique during consultations. The surgeon starts by removing the existing implants and eliminating the scar tissue that naturally forms due to the presence of implants. Once safely removed, the surgeon places new implants in the same manner as during breast augmentation surgery. Afterward, the incisions are stitched, and the intervention is completed. The duration of surgery is 1 - 3 hours.

Recovery

Recovery from implant replacement is very similar to the recovery from breast augmentation surgery. After the procedure, the patient stays overnight at our hospital. We strive to provide exceptional service, making the patient's stay as comfortable as possible.

Immediately after the operation, there may be pain, swelling, bruising, and possibly a feeling of pressure in the chest, along with a temporary disturbance in nipple sensitivity and difficulty breathing. These symptoms are expected and gradually improve, fully resolving within 1 to 2 weeks. If it is necessary, they will be regulated with medication.

During the recovery period, the patient wears a special bra to keep the implants in place. The recovery time is individual and depends on the patient. Most people return to work and daily activities within 7 to 10 days.

Avoiding strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects is necessary for the next 4 to 6 weeks. After 2 weeks from the surgery, once the incision wound is fully healed, the patient comes in for stitches removal.

Safety precautions

Every surgical procedure carries certain risks, and implant replacement surgery is no exception. Scarring at incision sites is expected to be more visible initially but will fade over time. More serious complications, although very rare, could include infections, bleeding, swelling, and adverse reactions to anesthesia.

With the top-notch team at Colić Hospital and proper preoperative and postoperative preparation, it is possible to completely avoid these risks.
