Otoplasty
Operation Description
Ear correction, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure used to correct deformities or irregularities in the shape and position of the ears. The goal of this procedure is to set the ears in a normal position, close to the head, to improve facial aesthetics and the patient's self-confidence. Otoplasty also addresses issues such as large ears, asymmetry, or deformities resulting from injuries.
If you have protruding ears and it affects your self-confidence, schedule a consultation at our Colić Hospital. One of our expert specialists in aesthetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery will discuss with you and, based on their assessment and your expectations, recommend the best solution.
Candidates
- Patients with protruding ears
- Patients dissatisfied with the appearance of their ears
- Patients with large ears
- Patients with asymmetrical ears
- Patients with ear deformities
- Children with protruding ears older than 5 years
Preparation
Ear correction for protruding ears is most commonly performed under local anesthesia. As preparation for the surgery, it is recommended to stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood clotting and complicate the operative and postoperative course 2 weeks before the procedure.
Operation time
The ear correction intervention begins with administering local anesthesia. Incisions are made behind the ear, starting with the removal of excess skin behind the ear. The cartilage is shaped, and if there is any excess cartilage, it is removed. The position of the ears is altered, reducing the angle of ear deviation. Afterward, the incisions are stitched, and a bandage is placed around the ears. The operation takes about 2 hours.
Recovery
Patients are typically discharged on the same day. The bandage around the ears is worn during the first 7 days of recovery and must not be removed. The first dressing is performed at our hospital on the morning after the intervention. Once the bandage is removed after 7 days, it is necessary to wear a headband during the day and night until the next check-up. Stitches are removed after 2 weeks.
During recovery, it is possible to experience ear pain, but it is controlled with pain relievers and quickly diminishes. Additionally, bruising and swelling are expected, as well as the accumulation of blood between the skin and cartilage. If decreased sensitivity or complete numbness of the ears occurs after the intervention, the sensitivity will return to normal within a few weeks. It is important to avoid activities during the first few weeks of recovery that could cause ear injury.
You can expect your ears to be tighter immediately after the intervention, and the true results will become visible after six months of the intervention, once the ears fully recover and adapt.
Safety precautions
In addition to the expected mild side effects of ear correction that quickly resolve, more severe complications are very rare. If complications occur, it may be challenging wound healing, bleeding, infections, asymmetry of the ear shells, and excessive tightness of the ears, making them appear glued to the head.
With the expertise of the surgeon you will encounter at the Colić Hospital and the follow-up of preoperative and postoperative advice, such complications are extremely rare.
