Labioplasty
Operation Description
Labioplasty, or correction of the labia minora, is a surgical procedure during which the small lips of the vagina are adjusted to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of the female genital region. Enlarged labia minora typically protrude from the vagina, are larger than the labia majora, and are often asymmetrical. These visual concerns are usually sufficient for women to opt for surgical correction. However, they can sometimes lead to irritations, frequent infections, hygiene difficulties, and discomfort during sports and sexual intercourse.
If you believe you are a candidate for labioplasty, schedule a consultation at Colić Hospital at +38169 3699801. Here, you'll find a team of expert surgeons specializing in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery who will explain all the details of the procedure, answer any questions, and assist you in making an informed decision.
Candidates
- Patients with congenitally enlarged labia minora
- Patients with enlarged labia minora due to pregnancy or aging
- Patients with frequent urinary infections due to labia minora hypertrophy
- Patients who avoid sexual intercourse due to issues with enlarged labia minora
Preparation
Labioplasty can be performed under general or local anesthesia. If conducted under general anesthesia, laboratory analyses and an internist examination with an ECG are required. It is advisable to stop taking aspirin and herbal supplements that may affect blood clotting two weeks before surgery as part of the preparation for the operation.
Operation time
Labioplasty can be performed using two techniques, which are discussed during consultations. One involves removing the edges of the labia minora to make them equal or slightly shorter than the labia majora. The second method is newer, involving cutting excess skin in the shape of a V, and then stitching these edges, leaving only a small, almost imperceptible scar. The duration of the operation is from 30 minutes to one hour.
Recovery
After labioplasty, the patient is discharged from the hospital and returns home. Strict rest is recommended during the first 3 to 5 days after the procedure, and patients can return to daily activities after a week. Stitches are removed 7 to 14 days after surgery. It is advised to avoid any strenuous physical activity or sexual intercourse for 4 - 6 weeks after the intervention.
Safety precautions
Labioplasty is a surgical procedure and, as such, carries certain risks. Expected side effects include swelling, mild pain, and discomfort immediately after surgery, which typically subside within the first 3 to 5 days of recovery. Rare and more severe complications may include infections, bleeding, significant swelling, and bruises that do not diminish. All of these can be entirely avoided by carefully following the preoperative and postoperative advice provided by the doctors at Colić Hospital.
